Penis Envy

The Aztecs may have held the Huastecans in contempt, but they admired their virility. This illustration from the Codex Borbonicus shows a moment in the Aztec harvest festival of Ochpaniztli when men impersonating Huastecans wear large false penises as they dance around priests. The central priest, wearing the skin of a sacrificial victim, impersonates Tochi, the mother of Cinteotl, the corn god.
