El Paso del Diablo
back next

The view from Tamohi, westward across the Tampaˇn River floodplain to the Sierra Oriental Mountains. The distant canyon is the Paso del Diablo (Devil's Pass). On the summer solstice, the setting sun drops into the Paso’s notch, an astral alignment which, in Mesoamerican cosmology, establishes Tamohi as a sacred center. The gray-green hills in the middle distance are Tamtoc's ceremonial mounds; that city, too, shared the same earth-sky alignment.
